How it works
~たい expresses the speaker's own desire to do an action. It attaches to a verb stem (the ます-form minus ます) and conjugates like an い-adjective. The object of the desire can be marked with either を or が, with が adding emphasis to the thing wanted. Because it states an inner feeling, it is normally used for the first person; for the third person you typically use ~たがる or ~たいようだ.
「~たい」は話し手自身が「~したい」という願望を表します。動詞のます形から「ます」を取った形(連用形)に付き、い形容詞のように活用します。目的語は「を」でも「が」でも示せますが、「が」は欲しい対象を強調します。自分の気持ちを述べる表現なので、基本的に一人称に使い、三人称には「~たがる」などを使います。
Formation
Vます-stem + たい(例:食べます→食べたい)
Examples
冷たい水が飲みたいです。
つめたいみずがのみたいです。
I want to drink some cold water.
今度の休みに京都へ行きたいです。
こんどのやすみにきょうとへいきたいです。
I want to go to Kyoto on my next day off.
もっと日本語が上手になりたい。
もっとにほんごがじょうずになりたい。
I want to get better at Japanese.
Notes
- ~たい conjugates exactly like an い-adjective: past is ~たかった, negative is ~たくない.「~たい」はい形容詞と同じように活用し、過去は「~たかった」、否定は「~たくない」になる。
- Use it for your own wishes; for someone else's wish prefer ~たがっている.自分の願望に使い、他人の願望には「~たがっている」を使うのが自然。
- Both を and が can mark the object (水を飲みたい / 水が飲みたい); が slightly emphasizes the object.目的語は「を」「が」どちらでも示せる(水を飲みたい/水が飲みたい)。「が」は対象を少し強調する。
