How it works

~てほしい expresses the speaker's desire for someone else to do an action. The person you want to act is usually marked with に. For wanting someone NOT to do something, use the ない-form: ~ないでほしい.

~てほしいは、話し手が「他の人に~してもらいたい」という希望を表します。動作をしてほしい相手は普通「に」で示します。~しないでほしいときは「~ないでほしい」を使います。

Formation

Verb て-form + ほしい(相手+に)。否定は Verb ない-form + でほしい(例:手伝う→手伝ってほしい、来る→来ないでほしい)

Examples

  • あなたに、もっとしょうじきになってほしいです。

I want you to be more honest.

  • ちょっとこのにもつをはこぶのをてつだってほしいんだけど。

I'd like you to help me carry this luggage, if you don't mind.

  • あぶないから、ここではあそばないでほしい。

It's dangerous, so I'd rather you didn't play here.

Notes

  • ~てほしい is for wanting ANOTHER person to act; for your own desire to do something use ~たい. The actor is marked with に.~てほしいは「他人に~してもらいたい」。自分がしたいことは~たいを使います。相手は「に」で示します。
  • Negative is ~ないでほしい ('I want you not to ~'). For talking about a third party's wish, ~てほしがっている is used (彼は私に来てほしがっている).否定は「~ないでほしい」。第三者の希望を述べるときは「~てほしがっている」を使います。
