たがる

How it works

Used to describe the desire of a third person (someone other than the speaker). It is formed from ~たい by replacing い with がる, turning an internal feeling into an observable behavior. Use ~たがっている for an ongoing/current desire and ~たがる for habitual or general tendencies.

Formation

Examples

My little brother wants to buy a new game.

Children always want to play outside.

He doesn't really want to talk about himself.

Notes

  • Do not use ~たがる for your own desire; use ~たい for the first person.
  • The object particle often becomes を (not が) with ~たがる, unlike ~たい which allows が.「~たい」と違い、目的語の助詞は「が」より「を」が普通です。
  • Use ~たがっている for someone's present, ongoing desire and ~たがる for habits/general tendencies.
