How it works

Negative conditional (なければ) + ならない expresses obligation or necessity ("must / have to ~"). Literally "if you don't ~, it won't do," it indicates something that is required.

Formation

Examples

I have to submit the report by tomorrow.

I have to take my medicine.

    I must study Japanese.

Notes

  • Polite form is ~なければなりません; casual/spoken forms include ~なきゃ(いけない) and ~なくちゃ.
  • The opposite "don't have to" is ~なくてもいい.
