How it works

~たくない is the negative form of ~たい and expresses that the speaker does not want to do something. You form it by changing the final い of ~たい to くない, just like negating an い-adjective. The polite version is ~たくないです or ~たくありません, and the past negative is ~たくなかった.

「~たくない」は「~たい」の否定形で、「~したくない」という気持ちを表します。「~たい」の語尾の「い」を「くない」に変えて作り、い形容詞の否定と同じ要領です。丁寧形は「~たくないです」または「~たくありません」、過去否定は「~たくなかった」です。

Formation

Vます-stem + たくない(例:食べます→食べたくない)

Examples

  • きょうはなにもたべたくないです。

I don't want to eat anything today.

  • あめだから、そとにでたくない。

It's raining, so I don't want to go outside.

  • あのひととはもうはなしたくありません。

I don't want to talk with that person anymore.

Notes

  • It conjugates like an い-adjective negative: 〜たくない → polite 〜たくないです / 〜たくありません.い形容詞の否定と同じく活用し、丁寧形は「~たくないです/~たくありません」になる。
  • Past negative is ~たくなかった ('didn't want to').過去否定は「~たくなかった」(~したくなかった)。
  • Saying it bluntly can sound strong; soften with から, んです, or けど in real conversation.そのまま言うと強い印象になることがあるので、会話では「から」「んです」「けど」で和らげると自然。
