How it works

~つもり expresses the speaker's intention or plan to do something. It attaches to the dictionary form of a verb and is usually followed by だ/です. To express the intention NOT to do something, use ~ないつもり. It indicates a firmer, more deliberate intention than a vague wish, and is typically used for the speaker's own plans.

「~つもり」は話し手の意図・予定(~しようと思っている)を表します。動詞の辞書形に付き、ふつう「だ/です」を伴います。「~しないつもりだ」とすれば「~しないつもり」を表します。漠然とした願望よりはっきりした意図を示し、ふつう話し手自身の予定に使います。

Formation

V辞書形 / Vない + つもりだ(例:行く→行くつもりだ/行かないつもりだ)

Examples

  • なつやすみにくにへかえるつもりです。

I intend to go back to my country during summer vacation.

  • きょうはもうおさけをのまないつもりです。

I don't intend to drink any more alcohol today.

  • しゅうまつはなにをするつもりですか。

What do you plan to do this weekend?

Notes

  • Attach to the dictionary form (帰る + つもり); for negative intention use the ない-form (帰らないつもり).辞書形に付く(帰る+つもり)。「~しない」意図は、ない形に付ける(帰らないつもり)。
  • つもり is a noun, so it normally takes だ/です after it.「つもり」は名詞なので、後ろに「だ/です」を伴うのがふつう。
  • It shows the speaker's own settled intention; for plans set by others, prefer 予定 (~予定だ).話し手自身の固まった意図を表す。他者が決めた予定には「予定(~予定だ)」を使うほうが自然。
