How it works

ほしい is an い-adjective meaning 'wanted/desired,' used to say you want to have an object (a noun), not to do an action. The thing wanted is marked with が. Like ~たい, it normally describes the speaker's own desire; for another person's desire use ~をほしがっている. The negative is ほしくない and the past is ほしかった.

「ほしい」は「欲しい」という意味のい形容詞で、動作ではなく物(名詞)を手に入れたいときに使います。欲しい物は「が」で示します。「~たい」と同様、基本的に話し手自身の願望を表し、他人の場合は「~をほしがっている」を使います。否定は「ほしくない」、過去は「ほしかった」です。

Formation

Noun + が + ほしい(例:新しい車がほしい)

Examples

  • あたらしいぱそこんがほしいです。

    I want a new computer.

  • たんじょうびになにがほしいですか。

What do you want for your birthday?

  • いまはおかねよりじかんがほしい。

Right now I want time more than money.

Notes

  • ほしい takes a noun (がほしい), while ~たい takes a verb (Vたい). Don't mix them up.「ほしい」は名詞に付き(~がほしい)、「~たい」は動詞に付く。混同しないこと。
  • It conjugates as an い-adjective: ほしくない (don't want), ほしかった (wanted).い形容詞として活用する:「ほしくない」(要らない)、「ほしかった」(欲しかった)。
  • For a third person's desire, use 〜をほしがっている (e.g., 弟は車をほしがっている).三人称の欲求は「~をほしがっている」を使う(例:弟は車をほしがっている)。
