How it works

A casual/blunt version of ~てあげる, used when doing a favor for someone lower in status, younger, or for animals/plants. Among close friends or family it is normal, but toward equals or superiors it can sound rude. It can also express the speaker's strong resolve or defiance ('I'll definitely do it / I'll show them').

Formation

Examples

I helped my little brother with his homework.

Every morning I take the dog for a walk.

This time I'll definitely win (you'll see).

Notes

  • Use only toward juniors, family, animals, or plants; toward equals/superiors it sounds rude — use ~てあげる instead.
  • With first-person resolve it conveys defiance or determination ('I'll show them').
  • The doer is the subject and the beneficiary is marked with に, like ~てあげる.「~てあげる」と同様、行為者が主語、受け手は「に」で示します。
