How it works

Expresses doing an action as a favor for someone else, where the giver is the subject. The benefit flows outward from the speaker (or in-group) to another person. Use with care toward superiors, as it can sound condescending.

Formation

Examples

I read a book for my little sister.

I'll teach my friend Japanese (as a favor).

I carried the elderly lady's luggage for her.

Notes

  • The doer of the favor is the subject (marked は/が); the beneficiary is usually marked に.
  • Avoid saying 〜てあげます directly to a superior, as it can sound like you're imposing a favor; use 〜ます or humble forms instead.
  • For an in-group/inferior receiver use 〜てやる; for a superior receiver use 〜てさしあげる.
