How it works

Expresses that the speaker (or in-group) receives the benefit of an action performed by someone else, often because they asked for it. The receiver of the favor is the subject, and the doer is marked with に (or から).

Formation

Examples

I had my friend take a photo (for me).

I had my teacher correct my essay.

I got my younger brother to clean the room.

Notes

  • The receiver/beneficiary is the subject; the person who does the action is marked with に (sometimes から).
  • When the doer is a superior, use the humble 〜ていただく for politeness.
  • Contrast with 〜てくれる: 〜てもらう focuses on the receiver actively getting/asking, while 〜てくれる focuses on the giver volunteering.「~てくれる」との違い:「もらう」は受け手が(頼んで)得る視点、「くれる」は与え手が自発的にする視点。
