How it works

Used to casually ask someone to do something for you (for your benefit). It is the negative-question form of ~てくれる, and the negative question softens the request, making it sound friendlier than a plain command. The rising intonation marks it as a question.

Formation

Examples

Could you help me out a little?

Sorry, but could you carry this luggage for me?

Could you give me a ride to the station tomorrow?

Notes

  • This is casual; use ~てくれませんか or ~てもらえませんか for politeness.
  • It is an action done for the speaker's benefit, so the subject doing the favor is someone other than the speaker.
  • ~てくれない? is slightly more direct/familiar than ~てもらえない?, which sounds a touch more humble.「~てもらえない?」
