How it works

The humble (謙譲語) equivalent of ~てあげる. It means the speaker does an action as a favor for someone of higher status. Because it can sound condescending — as if emphasizing your kindness toward a superior — it is used carefully; お~する is often safer when serving customers or superiors. The recipient takes に.

Formation

Examples

I showed the customer the way (as a favor).

Let's give up our seat for the elderly lady.

I carried the department manager's luggage for him.

Notes

  • It can sound like you're putting your kindness on display toward a superior, so it is often avoided; お~する is safer when serving customers/superiors.
  • The recipient of the favor is marked with に, and the action is done by the speaker's side.
