How it works

Indicates that you make a continuous, conscious effort to do (or not do) something as a habit. ~ようにしている (-te iru) is the habitual/ongoing form of ~ようにする, stressing that the effort is regular and sustained.

あることを習慣として意識的に続けて努力している(または避けている)ことを表します。「~ようにする」の継続形で、日常的・習慣的な心がけを強調します。

Formation

Verb dictionary form + ようにしている (positive); Verb ない-form + ようにしている (negative, e.g. 食べないようにしている).

Examples

  • けんこうのために、まいあさやさいをたべるようにしている。

For my health, I make a point of eating vegetables every morning.

  • よるはおそくまでスマホをみないようにしている。

I try not to look at my phone late at night.

  • できるだけかいだんをつかうようにしています。

I make an effort to use the stairs as much as possible.

Notes

  • ~ようにしている = ongoing habitual effort; ~ようにする = decide/try to do (one-time or starting now).「~ようにしている」は継続的な習慣の努力、「~ようにする」は決意・これからの努力。
  • Use ない-form for things you avoid: 食べないようにしている (try not to eat).避ける場合はない形:「食べないようにしている」。
  • Don't confuse with ~ようになる (a change in ability/state, not effort).「~ようになる」(能力・状態の変化)とは別物。
