How it works

Describes how a mechanism, system, or rule is structured or arranged so that something happens automatically or by design. It explains the way things work rather than someone's intention in the moment.

機械・仕組み・規則などが、ある結果になるように作られている・決められていることを説明します。その場の意図ではなく、もともとそういう構造・決まりだと述べる表現です。

Formation

Verb dictionary form + ようになっている (positive); Verb ない-form + ようになっている (negative). Often describes machines, rules, or systems.

Examples

  • このドアは、ひとがちかづくとじどうでひらくようになっている。

This door is set up so that it opens automatically when someone approaches.

  • Often used for machines, software, facilities, and regulations.機械・ソフト・施設・規則などによく使う。
  • Different from ~ようになった, which marks a change over time ('came to be able to').「~ようになった」(時間をかけた変化)とは意味が異なる。
