つもりだ

How it works

Expresses the speaker's firm intention or plan to do (or not do) something. Stronger and more settled than ~ようと思う. The negative can be formed as ~ないつもりだ (intend not to) or ~つもりはない (have no intention of).

話し手がはっきりと持っている意図・計画を表す。「ようと思う」より固まった決意を示す。否定は「~ないつもりだ(しないつもり)」または「~つもりはない(する気がない)」で表す。

Formation

Verb dictionary form + つもりだ/Verb ない-form + つもりだ

Examples

  • ことしこそタバコをやめるつもりです。

This year for sure, I intend to quit smoking.

  • そのえいがはもうみたので、またみるつもりはありません。

I've already seen that movie, so I have no intention of watching it again.

  • だいがくをそつぎょうしたらくにへかえるつもりです。

I intend to return to my home country after I graduate from university.

Notes

  • ~つもりはない (have no intention) is stronger and more decisive than ~ないつもりだ.「~つもりはない」は「~ないつもりだ」より強い拒否・否定の意志を表す。
  • Avoid stating someone else's つもり directly; use つもりらしい/つもりのようだ for third parties.他人の意図を断定するのは不自然なので、第三者には「つもりらしい・つもりのようだ」を使う。
  • Cannot be used for things outside your control (natural events); use 予定/はず instead.自分の意志でコントロールできない事柄(自然現象など)には使えない。その場合は「予定・はず」。
