How it works

Describes a gradual change in ability, habit, or situation over time — reaching a state that was not the case before. It is very common with the potential form to express newly gained ability.

Formation

V(plain dictionary form, often potential form) + ようになる / V(plain negative ない) + ようになる.

Examples

I have become able to speak Japanese.

I've gotten into the habit of waking up early every morning.

My little sister has come to eat vegetables (now).

Notes

  • Often paired with the potential form: 読める→読めるようになる (came to be able to read).
  • The negative change is 〜なくなる, e.g. 食べなくなった (stopped eating) — usually preferred over 〜ないようになる.
