べきではない

How it works

The negative of ~べきだ. States that an action is improper, wrong, or against common sense or duty—something one ought not to do. Stronger and more principled than しないほうがいい.

「~べきだ」の否定形。常識や道義から見て、それをするのはよくない・してはならないという判断を表します。「~しないほうがいい」より強い表現です。

Formation

Verb dictionary form + べきではない(べきじゃない is the casual contraction)。する → すべきではない/するべきではない。

Examples

  • ひとのわるぐちをいうべきではない。

You shouldn't speak ill of others.

  • たしかなしょうこがないのに、ひとをうたがうべきではないとおもう。

I don't think you should suspect someone without solid evidence.

  • かんじょうてきになって、すぐにけつろんをだすべきじゃない。

You shouldn't get emotional and jump to a conclusion.

Notes

  • The negation attaches to ではない, NOT to the verb: 言うべきではない (correct), not 言わないべきだ.否定は「ではない」につく。「言うべきではない」が正しく、「言わないべきだ」とは言わない。
  • べきじゃない is the casual spoken form of べきではない.「べきじゃない」は会話的な縮約形。
  • Stronger/more moral than ~ないほうがいい (gentle suggestion).「~ないほうがいい」(やわらかい提案)より強い、道義的な表現。
