How it works

Expresses making a conscious, ongoing effort to do or not do something as a habit or policy. Unlike 〜ようとする (a one-time attempt), this implies repeated effort or establishing a rule for oneself.

Formation

V(plain dictionary form) + ようにする / V(plain negative ない) + ようにする.

Examples

I make a point of exercising every day.

I'm trying not to eat sweet things.

Please make sure not to be late for class.

Notes

  • ~ようにしている (continuous) = an established habit; ~ようにする (plain) = deciding to start an effort.「~ようにしている」は続いている習慣、「~ようにする」はこれから努力する決意を表す。
  • Attaches to the plain dictionary form or the ない-form, never to ます-stem.
  • Compare with ~ようになる, which describes a change in state/ability rather than a deliberate effort.「~ようになる」は努力ではなく状態・能力の変化を表すので区別すること。
