How it works

~たら is a conditional meaning 'if/when.' It attaches to the past (た) form of verbs, い-adjectives, and the copula (e.g., 食べたら, 安かったら, 学生だったら). It expresses that once the first action/situation is realized, the second follows. It can mean a hypothetical 'if,' or a temporal 'when/once' for a sure future event, and is also used for unexpected discoveries (e.g., 'when I opened the door, ...').

「~たら」は「もし~/~したら」という条件・仮定を表します。動詞・い形容詞・名詞+だ の過去(た)形に付きます(例:食べたら、安かったら、学生だったら)。前の事柄が実現したら後の事柄が起こる、という意味で、仮定の「もし~」にも、確実な未来の「~したとき」にも使え、さらに「ドアを開けたら~だった」のような発見の用法もあります。
