How it works

~ば expresses a general or hypothetical condition: 'if A (is the case), then B.' It focuses on the condition itself and is common in proverbs, general truths, and hypotheticals. When the main clause expresses a command, request, or invitation, the ~ば clause usually cannot contain a controllable verb of the same subject (use ~たら instead).

「~ば」は一般的・仮定的な条件を表し、「AすればB」の形で使う。ことわざや一般的な事実、仮定の話によく使われ、条件そのものに焦点を当てる。主節が命令・依頼・勧誘などの場合、前件に同じ主語の意志動詞は使いにくい(その場合は「~たら」を使う)。

Formation

Verb: 〜u → 〜eば (例: 行く→行けば、食べる→食べれば); い-adj: 〜い → 〜ければ (高い→高ければ); な-adj/Noun: 〜なら(ば); Negative: 〜なければ

Examples

  • やすければ、かいます。

If it's cheap, I'll buy it.

  • れんしゅうすれば、じょうずになりますよ。

If you practice, you'll get better.

  • はるになれば、さくらがさきます。

When (if) spring comes, the cherry blossoms bloom.

Notes

  • If the main clause is a command/request/invitation, avoid using a controllable (volitional) verb of the same subject in the ば-clause; use たら instead.主節が命令・依頼・勧誘のとき、前件に同じ主語の意志動詞は使いにくい。その場合は「~たら」を使う。
  • ~ば highlights the condition (the 'if' part) more than the result.「~ば」は結果よりも条件(「もし」の部分)を強調する。
  • ~さえ~ば means 'as long as / if only': お金さえあれば (if only I had money).「~さえ~ば」は「~しさえすれば」の意味になる。
