How it works

~なら sets up a condition based on information just presented or assumed in context: 'if (it's true that) A / if you're talking about A, then B.' It often picks up the other speaker's topic and gives advice or an opinion. Unlike ~と/~ば/~たら, the action in the main clause can occur before the condition is fulfilled.

「~なら」は、相手の発言や文脈で想定された情報を前提に条件を立てる。「(Aということ)なら、Bだ」の形で、相手の話題を受けてアドバイスや意見を述べることが多い。「~と・~ば・~たら」と違い、主節の動作が条件の成立より前に起こることもある。

Formation

Noun + なら; な-adj + なら; い-adj 普通形 + なら; Verb 普通形 + なら (です・だ は付けない、例: 行くなら、安いなら、便利なら、日本語なら)

Examples

  • にほんごをべんきょうするなら、このほんがいいですよ。

If you're going to study Japanese, this book is good.

  • おんせんなら、はこねがおすすめです。

If it's hot springs (you want), I recommend Hakone.

  • そんなにつかれているなら、はやくねたほうがいいよ。

If you're that tired, you'd better go to bed early.

Notes

  • ~なら often responds to or takes up something the other person just said or implied.「~なら」は相手の発言や暗示した内容を受けて使うことが多い。
  • Do not attach だ before なら (×行くだなら → ○行くなら); nouns and な-adjectives attach directly.動詞・い形容詞の前に「だ」を付けない(×行くだなら)。名詞・な形容詞は直接接続する。
  • With ~なら, the main clause can happen before the conditional clause: 日本へ行くなら、カメラを買おう (buy the camera before going).主節の動作が条件より先に起こりうる点が「たら・ば・と」と異なる。
