How it works

Used to list two or more representative actions or states as examples, implying there are others not mentioned. Unlike て-form, which lists actions in sequence, たり〜たり gives a non-exhaustive, unordered sample. The final verb する (or です) carries the tense for the whole sentence.

代表的な動作や状態をいくつか例として挙げる表現で、ほかにもあることを含みます。「て形」が順番に並べるのに対し、「〜たり〜たり」は順不同で、例示のニュアンスがあります。文末の「する/です」が全体の時制を表します。

Formation

Vた-form + り ... Vた-form + り + する(例:食べたり飲んだりする)/ Naな・Nだった + り。動詞は「た」と同じ濁音化に従う(飲む→飲んだり)

Examples

  • しゅうまつはほんをよんだりえいがをみたりします。

On weekends I do things like read books and watch movies.

  • てんきがよかったりわるかったりして、ふくをえらぶのがたいへんです。

The weather is sometimes good and sometimes bad, so choosing clothes is hard.

  • きのうはともだちとはなしたりかいものしたりしました。

Yesterday I did things like talk with friends and go shopping.

Notes

  • The tense is shown only by the final する/した; the たり parts always stay in た-form.時制は文末の「する/した」だけで表し、「〜たり」の部分は常にた形のままです。
  • It implies the listed items are just examples, not a complete list—different from て-form which can suggest a full sequence.挙げたものは例にすぎず、完全な列挙ではない点が「て形」と違います。
  • Don't forget the second たり; saying just '〜たりする' with one item is possible but listing two is the standard pattern.二つ並べるのが基本ですが、一つだけ「〜たりする」とすることもあります。
