How it works

~とき marks the time at which something happens: 'when ~'. The tense before とき matters: non-past (帰るとき) means 'before/while the action happens (on the way to doing it)', while past (帰ったとき) means 'after the action is completed'. With nouns use の (子どものとき).

「~とき」は何かが起こる時点「~するとき」を表す。「とき」の前の時制が重要で、非過去(帰るとき)は動作の前・途中、過去(帰ったとき)は動作が完了した後を表す。名詞には「の」を付ける(子どものとき)。

Formation

Verb (plain) + とき / い-adj + とき / な-adj + な+とき / Noun + の+とき

Examples

  • にほんにいくとき、カメラをかった。

When I went to Japan (before going), I bought a camera.

  • にほんにいったとき、カメラをかった。

When I was in Japan (after arriving), I bought a camera.

  • こどものとき、よくこのこうえんであそんだ。

When I was a child, I often played in this park.

Notes

  • Non-past + とき = action not yet completed; past + とき = action already completed. This changes the meaning.非過去+とき=まだ完了していない、過去+とき=完了済み。意味が変わる。
  • な-adjectives take な (暇なとき), nouns take の (学生のとき).な形容詞は「な」(暇なとき)、名詞は「の」(学生のとき)を付ける。
  • Often written in kana (とき) in grammar contexts, but 時 is also common.文法的には「とき」と書くことが多いが、「時」も一般的。
