How it works

Expresses 'only' by combining しか with a negative verb. It emphasizes that there is nothing beyond the stated amount, often implying the amount is small, insufficient, or unexpected.

「しか」と否定の述語を組み合わせて「~しかない=それ以外にはない」と限定を表す。数量が少ない・不十分・意外だという気持ちを含むことが多い。

Formation

Noun + しか + V(negative)。しか replaces は/が/を; with other particles: にしか, でしか, からしか.

Examples

  • さいふに ひゃくえんしか ありません。

I have only 100 yen in my wallet.

  • にほんごが すこししか はなせません。

I can speak only a little Japanese.

  • ここからは ばすでしか いけません。

From here you can only go by bus.

Notes

  • しか MUST be followed by a negative predicate (ない/ません), even though the meaning is positive 'only'.「しか」は必ず否定(ない・ません)と一緒に使う。意味は肯定の「~だけ」だが述語は否定。
  • しか replaces は/が/を, but stacks onto に/で/から (にしか, でしか, からしか).「は・が・を」は「しか」に置き換わるが、「に・で・から」には重ねて使う(にしか・でしか・からしか)。
  • Carries a nuance of insufficiency/limitation, unlike the neutral だけ.中立の「だけ」と違い、「少ない・足りない」という気持ちを含む。
