けど

But; although (clause-connecting)

JLPT
N5
Register
casual

How it works

けど connects two clauses within one sentence to express contrast, meaning 'but' or 'although.' It is the casual/conversational form of けれども (with けれど and けど as shorter variants). It can attach to both plain and polite forms.

Formation

Clause 1 (plain or polite) + けど、+ Clause 2

Examples

This shop is cheap, but it's tasty.

Japanese is difficult, but it's interesting.

I called, but they didn't pick up.

Notes

  • けど connects clauses inside one sentence; でも starts a new sentence.「けど」は一文の中で節をつなぎます。
  • Politeness order from casual to formal:
  • けど is also used to soften statements or trail off politely (e.g. 'すみませんが…').「けど」は言い方をやわらかくしたり、文を言いさしにするときにも使います。
