How it works

しかし is a sentence-initial conjunction meaning "however / but." Unlike が and けれども (which join clauses inside one sentence), しかし begins a new sentence and links it to the previous one. It is fairly formal and common in writing, news, and speeches; でも is its more casual counterpart.

Formation

Examples

I took the medicine. However, I didn't get better.

He is young. However, he has a great deal of experience.

It was raining. However, the match was held.

Notes

  • しかし starts a NEW sentence; it does not attach to the end of a clause like が/けれども.「しかし」は新しい文を始めます。
  • It is usually followed by a comma: 「
  • In casual conversation, でも is preferred over しかし.
