How it works

が marks the grammatical subject, especially when introducing new information, identifying who/what does something, or answering a question word (誰, 何). It is also required with certain expressions: existence (あります/います), ability (できる, 〜が好き/上手), and to mark the thing described in 〜があります.

Examples

    There is a cat.

    Who came?

    I like Japanese.

Notes

  • Question words like 誰 (who) and 何 (what) take が, not は: 誰が来ましたか.「誰」「何」などの疑問詞は「が」を取ります(誰が来ましたか)。
  • が introduces new or emphasized info; once established, the topic usually switches to は.「が」は新情報・強調を導入し、定着後は「は」に変わることが多いです。
