How it works

でも is a conjunction placed at the beginning of a sentence to contrast with the previous sentence, meaning 'but' or 'however.' It connects two separate sentences rather than two clauses within one sentence. It is fairly casual/conversational; しかし is its more formal equivalent.

Formation

Sentence 1. + でも、+ Sentence 2.

Examples

It's cold today. But it isn't snowing.

This dish is delicious. But it's a little expensive.

I studied. But the test was difficult.

Notes

  • でも starts a new sentence; to connect clauses within one sentence use が or けど instead.「でも」は新しい文の頭に置きます。
  • でも is conversational; しかし is the more formal/written equivalent.「でも」は口語的で、かたい場面では「しかし」を使います。
  • Sentence-initial でも (conjunction) is different from the particle でも meaning 'even / or something' (e.g. コーヒーでも飲みませんか).「コーヒーでも飲みませんか」のような助詞の「でも」(〜でも)とは用法が違います。
