How it works

だから is a sentence-initial conjunction meaning 'therefore' or 'so.' The first sentence states a reason or cause, and だから introduces the resulting conclusion or consequence. The more polite version is ですから.

Formation

Sentence 1 (reason). + だから、+ Sentence 2 (result).

Examples

Tomorrow is a day off. So, today I'll have lots of fun.

It's raining. So, I'll take an umbrella.

He is kind. That's why he's liked by everyone.

Notes

  • だから starts a new sentence; to connect a reason within one sentence use から or ので.「だから」は新しい文の頭に置きます。
  • Use ですから for a more polite tone.
  • Beginning a reply with だから can sound impatient ('like I said...'), so use it carefully in conversation.
