~よう (volitional)

volitional (ichidan/する/くる): let's / I'll (intention)

意志形(一段・する・来る動詞):~しよう

JLPT
N4
Register
casual

How it works

The volitional form for ichidan verbs is ~よう, expressing the speaker's intention ('I'll do') or a suggestion to do something together ('let's do'). する becomes しよう and くる becomes こよう. The polite equivalent is ~ましょう. With ~と思う it expresses an intention one has decided on.

一段動詞の意志形は「~よう」で、話し手の意志(「~しよう」)や一緒にしようという誘い(「~しよう」)を表す。「する」は「しよう」、「来る」は「来よう」になる。丁寧形は「~ましょう」。「~と思う」と合わせると、決めた意志を表す。

Formation

Ichidan: 〜る → 〜よう (食べる→食べよう、見る→見よう); する → しよう; くる → こよう; 丁寧形は 〜ましょう

Examples

  • きょうははやくねよう。

Let's go to bed early today. / I'll go to bed early today.

  • そろそろでかけよう。

    Let's head out soon.

  • まいあさ、うんどうしようとおもっています。

I'm thinking of exercising every morning.

Notes

  • The plain volitional (寝よう) is casual; use ~ましょう in polite speech.普通形の意志形(寝よう)はカジュアル。丁寧には「~ましょう」を使う。
  • ~ようと思う = 'I intend / am thinking of doing'; ~ようとする = 'try/attempt to do.'「~ようと思う」は意志、「~ようとする」は試みを表す。
  • Volitional is for actions you control; you cannot say ×わかろう for non-volitional verbs like 分かる.意志動詞に使う。「分かる」のような無意志動詞には使えない。
