How it works

For godan verbs, the potential is formed by changing the final ~u to ~e and adding る (書く→書ける, 読む→読める, 話す→話せる). It means 'can do / be able to.' The object is often marked with が. Unlike ichidan potential, godan potential does not have a ら-drop issue since it's already a single 〜eる form.

五段動詞の可能形は、語尾の「u」段を「e」段に変えて「る」を付ける(書く→書ける、読む→読める、話す→話せる)。「~できる」を表す。目的語は「が」で示すことが多い。一段の「ら抜き」のような問題はなく、もともと「eる」の一語化した形である。

Formation

Godan: 〜u段 → 〜e段 + る (書く→書ける、泳ぐ→泳げる、話す→話せる、買う→買える)

Examples

  • わたしはにほんごがすこしはなせます。

I can speak a little Japanese.

  • あなたはなんメートルぐらいおよげますか。

About how many meters can you swim?

  • このかんじがよめますか。

    Can you read this kanji?

Notes

  • The object of ability is usually marked with が (日本語が話せる), though を is heard colloquially.能力の対象は普通「が」で示す(日本語が話せる)。会話では「を」も聞かれる。
  • Potential verbs are themselves ichidan and conjugate accordingly (読める→読めます→読めない).可能動詞自体は一段動詞として活用する(読める→読めます→読めない)。
  • 話す→話せる: note 〜す verbs become 〜せる (do not confuse with the causative せる).「話す→話せる」のように「す」動詞は「せる」になる(使役の「せる」と混同しない)。
