~おう (volitional)

volitional (godan): let's / I'll (intention)

意志形(五段動詞):~しよう

How it works

For godan verbs, the volitional is formed by changing the final ~u to ~o and adding う (行く→行こう, 飲む→飲もう, 話す→話そう). It expresses the speaker's intention or a suggestion ('let's / I'll'). The polite form is ~ましょう. Combine with ~と思う for a decided intention.

五段動詞の意志形は、語尾の「u」段を「o」段に変えて「う」を付ける(行く→行こう、飲む→飲もう、話す→話そう)。話し手の意志や誘い(「~しよう」)を表す。丁寧形は「~ましょう」。「~と思う」と合わせると決めた意志を表す。

Formation

Godan: 〜u段 → 〜o段 + う (行く→行こう、飲む→飲もう、待つ→待とう、買う→買おう)

Examples

  • しゅうまつはうみへいこう。

Let's go to the sea this weekend.

  • もうすこしまとうか。

Shall we wait a little longer?

  • らいねんはくるまをかおうとおもっています。

I'm thinking of buying a car next year.

Notes

  • Plain volitional (行こう) is casual; ~ましょう is its polite counterpart.普通形(行こう)はカジュアル。丁寧には「~ましょう」を使う。
  • ~おうと思う expresses a decided intention; ~おうとする means 'try/attempt to.'「~おうと思う」は決めた意志、「~おうとする」は試みを表す。
  • Verbs ending in 〜う form the volitional with 〜おう (買う→買おう [kaou], 思う→思おう [omoou]).「う」で終わる動詞は「お+う」になる(買う→買おう、思う→思おう)。
