~ように / ような
like; as; similar to
~のように・~のような(比喩・例示・たとえ)
- JLPT
- N4
- Register
- neutral
How it works
Used for comparison, simile, or giving examples. ~ような modifies a noun ('a ~ like/such as X'), while ~ように modifies a verb or adjective ('in the manner of X / like X'). With nouns you must insert の: 雪のような, 鳥のように. More formal/neutral than みたい.
比喩・たとえ・例示に使う。「~ような」は名詞を修飾し(~のような)、「~ように」は動詞・形容詞を修飾する(~のように)。名詞に付くときは「の」を入れる(雪のような・鳥のように)。「みたい」より中立的・やや改まった表現。
Formation
Noun + の + ような + Noun/Noun + の + ように + Verb/Adj(Verb plain form + ように also used)
Examples
彼女は花のような笑顔で挨拶した。
かのじょははなのようなえがおであいさつした。
She greeted us with a smile like a flower.
鳥のように空を飛んでみたい。
とりのようにそらをとんでみたい。
I'd like to try flying through the sky like a bird.
東京のような大きな町に住みたいです。
とうきょうのようなおおきなまちにすみたいです。
I want to live in a big city like Tokyo.
Notes
- With nouns, insert の (花のような, not 花ような).名詞に付くときは「の」を入れる(花のような。×花ような)。
- ような modifies nouns; ように modifies verbs and adjectives.名詞の前は「ような」、動詞・形容詞の前は「ように」。
- ように also has other functions (purpose '~so that', request); here the focus is the simile/example use.「ように」には目的(~するように)や依頼など別の用法もあるが、ここでは比喩・例示の用法を扱う。
