How it works

~ように expresses a purpose or goal where the outcome is not the subject's direct volitional action: 'so that (a state/result) will happen.' It typically follows a potential verb, a negative verb, or a non-volitional verb (e.g. 分かる, 見える, できる, 〜ない). Contrast with ~ために, which is used when the subject intentionally controls the action.

「~ように」は、その結果が主語の直接的な意志的行為ではない目的を表し、『~という状態になるように』という意味です。可能動詞・否定形・無意志動詞(分かる・見える・できる・~ない など)に付くのが典型です。主語が意志的に動作を制御する場合に使う「~ために」と対比されます。

Formation

Verb (dictionary / ない-form, typically potential or non-volitional) + ように

Examples

  • うしろのせきからもみえるように、おおきくかいた。

I wrote it large so that it can be seen even from the back seats.

  • わすれないように、メモしておきます。

    I'll make a note so that I don't forget.

  • にほんごがはなせるように、まいにちれんしゅうしている。

I practice every day so that I can speak Japanese.

Notes

  • ~ように follows non-volitional/potential/negative verbs (見える, できる, 忘れない); ~ために follows volitional verbs where the subject controls the action (留学するために).「ように」は無意志・可能・否定の動詞(見える・できる・忘れない)に付き、「ために」は主語が制御する意志動詞(留学するために)に付きます。
  • The subject of the ように clause and the main clause can differ (e.g. 'so that the child can hear').「ように」の主語と主節の主語が異なってもよい(例:子供に聞こえるように)。
  • Often pairs with verbs of effort/preparation: ~ように 〜する/努力する/注意する/しておく.「~ように努力する/注意する/しておく」など、努力・準備を表す動詞と一緒に使うことが多いです。
