~みたいに / みたいな
like; similar to (casual)
~のように・~のような(口語的な比喩・例示)
- JLPT
- N4
- Register
- casual
How it works
The casual, spoken equivalent of ~ように/ような. ~みたいな modifies nouns ('a ~ like X'), and ~みたいに modifies verbs/adjectives ('like X, ~ly'). It is used for comparison (resemblance) and giving examples. More colloquial than ようだ.
「~ように/ような」のくだけた話し言葉版。「~みたいな」は名詞を修飾し(~のような)、「~みたいに」は動詞・形容詞を修飾する(~のように)。比喩(似ている)や例示に使う。「ようだ」より口語的。
Formation
Noun + みたいな + Noun/Noun + みたいに + Verb/Adj(Plain form + みたいだ also possible)
Examples
弟は子どもみたいに泣いていた。
おとうとはこどもみたいにないていた。
My little brother was crying like a child.
彼女は天使みたいな笑顔だね。
かのじょはてんしみたいなえがおだね。
She has a smile like an angel.
今日は夏みたいに暑いね。
きょうはなつみたいにあついね。
It's hot like summer today, isn't it?
Notes
- みたい attaches directly to nouns without の (×子どものみたい, ○子どもみたい).名詞には「の」を付けずに直接つく(×子どものみたい、○子どもみたい)。
- Use みたいに before verbs/adjectives and みたいな before nouns.動詞・形容詞の前は「みたいに」、名詞の前は「みたいな」。
- Considered casual/spoken; in writing or formal speech prefer ように/ような or のようだ.くだけた話し言葉。文章や改まった場面では「ように/ような・のようだ」が好まれる。
