How it works

Attached to a verb stem (ます-stem), ~づらい means 'hard to do' because doing it causes difficulty, discomfort, or psychological reluctance. It often implies the doer feels strain or hesitation, unlike ~にくい, which is more neutral about objective/physical difficulty.

動詞のます形(連用形)に付いて、「~するのが困難だ・つらい」を表す。動作にともなう苦痛・不快感や心理的なためらいを含むことが多い。客観的・物理的な難しさを中立的に表す「~にくい」と対比される。

Notes

  • Conjugates like an i-adjective (歩きづらい→歩きづらかった、歩きづらくない).イ形容詞として活用する(歩きづらい→歩きづらかった・歩きづらくない)。
  • ~づらい emphasizes the speaker's difficulty or discomfort, while ~にくい is more neutral/objective.「~づらい」は話し手のつらさ・ためらいを強調し、「~にくい」はより中立的・客観的。
  • The opposite is ~やすい (easy to do).反対の意味は「~やすい」。
