How it works

The past form of ~ている. It expresses an action that was in progress in the past ('was doing'), a continuing past state, or a completed action whose result remained ('had done'). Which meaning applies depends on the verb and context.

「~ている」の過去形。過去のある時点で進行中だった動作(~していた)、過去の継続的な状態、あるいは完了してその結果が残っていた状態(~してしまっていた)を表す。動詞や文脈によって意味が決まる。

Formation

Verb (て-form) + いた(polite: ~ていました)

Examples

  • きのうのよる、わたしはテレビをみていました。

Last night, I was watching TV.

  • でんわしたとき、かれはねていました。

When I called, he was sleeping.

  • きょうしつについたら、もうじゅぎょうがはじまっていました。

When I arrived at the classroom, the class had already started.

Notes

  • With action verbs it means 'was doing'; with change-of-state verbs it means 'had done / was in a state.'動作動詞では「~していた(進行)」、変化動詞では「~してしまっていた(結果状態)」を表す。
  • In casual speech, ~ていた often contracts to ~てた (例: 見てた).会話では「~てた」と縮約されることが多い(例:見てた)。
  • Contrast with the simple past (見た = watched/did), which states a completed action without the ongoing/state nuance.単純過去「見た」は完了した動作を述べるだけで、進行・状態のニュアンスがない点で異なる。
