How it works

Attaches to the verb stem to mean that an action is very difficult—often nearly impossible—to do, usually for psychological or abstract reasons rather than physical difficulty. It is more formal and literary than ~にくい and combines with a limited set of verbs.

動詞のます形の語幹に付いて、ある動作をするのが非常に困難で、ほとんど不可能であることを表します。物理的な難しさよりも心理的・抽象的な理由のことが多いです。~にくいより文語的・改まった表現で、結びつく動詞が限られます。

Formation

Vます-stem + がたい (e.g. 信じ + がたい → 信じがたい)

Examples

  • かれのはなしはしんじがたいものだった。

His story was hard to believe.

  • あのひのかんどうはわすれがたい。

The emotion of that day is unforgettable.

  • どちらがただしいか、いまははんだんしがたい。

It is hard to judge which one is correct right now.

Notes

  • Use the ます-stem: 信じがたい (correct), not 信じるがたい.ます形の語幹に付けます。信じがたい(○)/信じるがたい(×)。
  • It pairs mainly with verbs of perception/judgment/emotion (信じる, 想像する, 忘れる, 理解する); it is unnatural with everyday physical actions (e.g. 食べがたい is odd—use 食べにくい).信じる・想像する・忘れる・理解するなど認識・判断・感情の動詞と結びつきます。日常的な物理動作には不自然です(食べがたい×→食べにくい)。
  • More formal/written than ~にくい and ~づらい.~にくい・~づらいより文語的で改まった表現です。
