How it works

Attaches to the verb stem to indicate that an action is difficult to perform, often due to the nature of the object or situation. The whole word behaves like an い-adjective (にくい → にくくて, にくかった).

動詞のます形の語幹に付いて、その動作をするのが難しいことを表します。多くは対象や状況の性質に起因します。全体がい形容詞のように活用します(にくくて、にくかった)。

Formation

Vます-stem + にくい (e.g. 食べ + にくい → 食べにくい)

Examples

  • このくすりはおおきくて、のみにくい。

This medicine is big and hard to swallow.

  • このじはちいさくて、よみにくいです。

This print is small and hard to read.

  • あめのひはみちがすべりやすくてあるきにくい。

On rainy days the road is slippery and hard to walk on.

Notes

  • Use the ます-stem: 食べにくい (correct), not 食べるにくい.ます形の語幹に付けます。食べにくい(○)/食べるにくい(×)。
  • にくい conjugates like an い-adjective: 食べにくくない (not hard to eat), 食べにくかった (was hard to eat).にくいはい形容詞のように活用します(食べにくくない/食べにくかった)。
  • It is the natural antonym of ~やすい (easy to do).~やすい(~しやすい)の対義表現です。
