～やすい

How it works

Attaches to the verb stem to indicate that an action is easy to perform, or that something tends to happen easily. The whole word inflects like an い-adjective (やすい → やすくて, やすかった).

動詞のます形の語幹に付いて、その動作をするのが簡単であること、または何かが起こりやすい傾向にあることを表します。全体がい形容詞のように活用します（やすくて、やすかった）。

Formation

Vます-stem + やすい (e.g. 食べ + やすい → 食べやすい)

Examples

• この先生の説明は分かりやすい。

  このせんせいのせつめいはわかりやすい。

  This teacher's explanations are easy to understand.

• 白いシャツは汚れやすいです。

  しろいシャツはよごれやすいです。

  White shirts get dirty easily.

• このペンは軽くて書きやすい。

  このペンはかるくてかきやすい。

  This pen is light and easy to write with.

Notes

• Use the ます-stem: 書きやすい (correct), not 書くやすい.ます形の語幹に付けます。書きやすい（○）／書くやすい（×）。
• Besides 'easy to do,' it can mean 'tends to easily happen' (e.g. 壊れやすい = breaks easily).「～しやすい」だけでなく「～しがちだ／起こりやすい」の意味にもなります（例：壊れやすい）。
• Do not confuse with the adjective 安い ('cheap'); only the kana やすい is the suffix here.形容詞の安い（値段が安い）と混同しないように。ここでの接尾語は仮名のやすいです。
