How it works

Japanese has pairs of intransitive verbs (自動詞), which describe something happening on its own and take が, and transitive verbs (他動詞), which describe an action done to an object and take を. For example, ドアが開く (the door opens, intransitive) vs ドアを開ける (someone opens the door, transitive). Choosing the right one and its particle is essential.

日本語には、自然に起こることを表し「が」を取る自動詞と、対象に働きかける動作を表し「を」を取る他動詞のペアが多くある。例えば「ドアが開く(自動詞)」対「ドアを開ける(他動詞)」。正しい動詞と助詞を選ぶことが重要。

Formation

自動詞: 〜が + 自動詞 (例: ドアが開く) / 他動詞: 〜を + 他動詞 (例: ドアを開ける)

Examples

  • かぜでまどがあきました。

The window opened from the wind. (intransitive)

  • おとうとがまどをあけました。

My little brother opened the window. (transitive)

  • でんきがきえたので、もういちどつけました。

The light went out, so I turned it on again. (消える intransitive / つける transitive)

Notes

  • Intransitive verbs take が and have no doer acting on an object; transitive verbs take を and an agent.自動詞は「が」を取り対象に働きかけない。他動詞は「を」を取り動作主がいる。
  • Many pairs share a stem (開く/開ける, 始まる/始める, 消える/消す); learn them as sets.語幹を共有するペアが多い(開く/開ける、始まる/始める、消える/消す)。セットで覚える。
  • ~ている with intransitive verbs often shows a resulting state (例: 窓が開いている = the window is open).自動詞+「ている」は結果状態を表すことが多い(例:窓が開いている)。
