How it works

A suffix that turns a noun, adjective, or verb stem into a な/い-style descriptive word meaning 'has the qualities of' or 'tends to.' It often carries a slightly negative or casual nuance (e.g., 子供っぽい = childish).

名詞・形容詞・動詞の連用形などに付いて、「~のような感じ」「~の性質・傾向がある」という意味の形容詞をつくる接尾語。やや否定的・くだけたニュアンスを帯びることが多い(例:子供っぽい)。

Formation

Noun / い-adj stem / Verb masu-stem + っぽい(活用はい形容詞)

Examples

  • かれはもうおとななのに、かんがえかたがこどもっぽい。

He's an adult already, but his way of thinking is childish.

  • このみず、ちょっとしろっぽいけどだいじょうぶかな。

This water looks a bit whitish; I wonder if it's okay.

  • さいきん、わすれっぽくなってこまっている。

Lately I've become forgetful and it's a problem.

Notes

  • Conjugates like an い-adjective (っぽくない, っぽかった).い形容詞のように活用する(っぽくない、っぽかった)。
  • With verb stems it often means 'prone to' (忘れっぽい = forgetful).動詞連用形に付くと「~しやすい性質」を表す(忘れっぽい)。
  • More casual than ~らしい or ~みたい and often slightly critical.「~らしい」「~みたい」よりくだけており、批判的な響きを持つことが多い。
