How it works

Conditional ~と expresses that whenever A happens, B naturally and inevitably follows. It is used for natural results, habits, general truths, machine operation, and directions. The main clause cannot express the speaker's will, request, command, or invitation (×ボタンを押すと、待ってください).

条件の「~と」は、Aが起これば必ず・自然にBになるという必然的な結果を表す。自然現象・習慣・一般的事実・機械の操作・道案内などに使う。主節に話し手の意志・依頼・命令・勧誘は使えない(×ボタンを押すと、待ってください)。

Formation

Verb 辞書形/ない形 + と (押すと / 押さないと); い-adj + と (寒いと); な-adj・Noun + だと (静かだと / 子供だと)

Examples

  • このボタンをおすと、ドアがひらきます。

If/when you press this button, the door opens.

  • はるになると、あたたかくなります。

When spring comes, it gets warm.

  • まっすぐいくと、みぎにえきがあります。

If you go straight, the station is on the right.

Notes

  • The main clause cannot contain the speaker's intention, a request, command, or invitation.主節に意志・依頼・命令・勧誘は使えない。
  • Use ~と for things that always happen automatically (natural consequence, habit, mechanism).いつも自動的に起こること(必然・習慣・機械の動作)に使う。
  • な-adjectives and nouns require だ before と (静かだと, not ×静かと).な形容詞・名詞には「だ」を付ける(静かだと)。
