How it works

The passive form for ichidan verbs (and する→される, くる→こられる) is made with ~られる. It marks the subject as the receiver of an action. The agent (the doer) is usually marked with に. Japanese also has the 'suffering/adversative passive,' where the subject is negatively affected by an event.

一段動詞(および する→される、来る→来られる)の受身形は「~られる」で作る。主語が動作を受ける側であることを示し、動作主は普通「に」で表す。日本語には、出来事によって主語が迷惑を被る「迷惑の受身」もある。

Formation

Ichidan: 〜る → 〜られる (食べる→食べられる、見る→見られる); する → される; くる → こられる; 動作主は「に」

Examples

  • せんせいになまえをおぼえられました。

My name was remembered by the teacher.

  • おとうとにケーキをたべられました。

My (younger) brother ate the cake (on me / to my annoyance).

  • このえいがはおおくのひとにみられています。

This movie is watched by many people.

Notes

  • The agent is normally marked with に (先生に); for creation/production verbs, によって is used (書く→によって書かれる).動作主は普通「に」で表す。創作・生産の動詞では「によって」を使う。
  • Note that 食べられる, 見られる, etc. are identical in form to the potential — context decides meaning.「食べられる」「見られる」は可能形と同形なので文脈で判断する。
  • The 'suffering passive' shows the subject is troubled even when an object is present (弟にケーキを食べられた).迷惑の受身では、目的語があっても主語が被害を受ける意味になる。
