How it works

Indicates that whenever the first action/event occurs, the second consistently follows. Emphasizes repetition tied to a specific occasion or action. Often used when something brings about a recurring result or reminds you of something.

前のことが起こるたびに、いつも後のことが起こるという意味です。ある動作・出来事のたびに決まって何かが伴うことを表し、思い出や繰り返し起こる結果を述べるときに使います。

Formation

Verb-dictionary form / Noun + の + たびに

Examples

  • このきょくをきくたびに、がくせいじだいをおもいだす。

Every time I hear this song, I remember my school days.

  • かれはしゅっちょうのたびに、おみやげをかってきてくれる。

Every time he goes on a business trip, he buys me a souvenir.

  • しけんのたびにきんちょうして、おなかがいたくなる。

Every time there's a test, I get nervous and my stomach hurts.

Notes

  • Use dictionary form (not た form) of verbs before たびに.動詞は辞書形を使います(た形は使いません)。
  • Nouns require の (出張のたびに, not 出張たびに).名詞には「の」が必要です(出張のたびに)。
  • Implies an irregular but recurring occasion, unlike ごとに which suits regular fixed intervals.「ごとに」が規則的な間隔に合うのに対し、「たびに」はそのつど起こる出来事に使います。
