How it works

Has two main uses: (1) hearsay — reporting information you heard from someone or somewhere ('I hear that...'), and (2) explanation/conclusion — restating or summarizing what something means ('that is to say...'). Context distinguishes the two.

Examples

According to the weather forecast, it's going to snow heavily tomorrow.

No reply means that he isn't coming.

I hear the manager is away on a business trip, so I can't reach him until next week.

Notes

  • For hearsay, it often pairs with a source like ~によると ('according to...').
  • The 'meaning/conclusion' use is common after つまり or after restating a situation (~ということは...).
  • More formal/objective than the plain ~そうだ for reporting; common in news and written reports.
