How it works
Used to introduce a topic in order to define or explain it. It picks up a word or concept ('the thing called X') and the rest of the sentence gives its definition or explanation, often ending in ~ことだ or ~という意味だ.

Notes
- Often used to define vocabulary: 「X」というのは~ことです.
- The casual spoken form is ~って (例:「もったいない」って、〜).
- Different from ~ということだ (hearsay/conclusion); ~というのは sets up a topic to be explained.「~ということだ(伝聞・結論)」とは役割が違い、「~というのは」は説明する話題を提示する。
