わけがない

How it works

Used to strongly deny a possibility based on reason or logic — 'there's absolutely no way that...'. The speaker is confident the statement cannot be true. A more casual/contracted form is ~わけない.

理由や常識から考えて「絶対にありえない」と強く否定するときに使う。話し手はそれが事実ではないと確信している。口語では「わけない」と縮めることもある。

Formation

Verb (plain) / い-adj (plain) + わけがない;な-adj + な + わけがない;Noun + である + わけがない

Examples

  • あんなにべんきょうしたのに、ごうかくしないわけがない。

After studying that much, there's no way I won't pass.

  • かれがうそをつくわけがない。とてもしょうじきなひとだから。

There's no way he would lie. He's a very honest person.

  • こんなたかいみせ、がくせいにてがだせるわけがないよ。

There's no way a student could afford such an expensive place.

Notes

  • Denies possibility from logic/reason; ~わけがない is generally stronger and more emphatic than ~はずがない.論理や常識から可能性を否定する。「はずがない」より強く断定的なニュアンスがある。
  • Do not confuse with ~わけではない ('it's not that...'), which only partially denies.「わけではない(部分否定)」と混同しないこと。意味が違う。
  • な-adjectives and nouns need な/である before わけがない (静かなわけがない, 学生であるわけがない).な形容詞・名詞には「な/である」が必要(静かなわけがない・学生であるわけがない)。
