How it works

Hearsay ~そうだ reports information the speaker obtained from another source (news, a person, a book) without adding judgment. It attaches to the plain form of verbs, adjectives, and nouns. It often pairs with phrases like ~によると ('according to'). It has no conjugation of its own and is not used in negative/past forms of そうだ itself.

伝聞の「~そうだ」は、ニュース・人・本などから得た情報を、話し手の判断を加えずにそのまま伝える表現です。動詞・形容詞・名詞の普通形に付きます。「~によると」と一緒に使われることが多いです。「そうだ」自体は活用せず、否定や過去の形にはしません。

Formation

Verb / い-adj / な-adj / Noun (all plain form, e.g. だ) + そうだ

Examples

  • てんきよほうによると、あしたはあめがふるそうだ。

According to the weather forecast, it will rain tomorrow.

  • たなかさんのはなしでは、あのみせはとてもやすいそうです。

According to Tanaka, that shop is very cheap.

  • かれはらいげつ、けっこんするそうだ。

I heard he's getting married next month.

Notes

  • Hearsay そうだ attaches to PLAIN forms (降るそうだ, 安いそうだ, 学生だそうだ). The conjecture そうだ ('looks like') attaches to stems (降りそうだ, 安そうだ) — don't confuse them.伝聞の「そうだ」は普通形に付きます(降るそうだ・安いそうだ・学生だそうだ)。様態の「そうだ」(~しそう)は語幹に付く(降りそう・安そう)ので混同しないこと。
  • Information source is often marked with ~によると or ~の話では.情報源は「~によると」「~の話では」で示すことが多いです。
  • そうだ in the hearsay sense cannot itself be negated or put in the past (no そうじゃない/そうだった); make the embedded clause negative/past instead (降らないそうだ, 降ったそうだ).伝聞の「そうだ」自体は否定・過去にできません。中の文を否定形・過去形にします(降らないそうだ/降ったそうだ)。
