～によると

How it works

Indicates the source of reported information — 'according to X'. It is used at the start of a sentence and typically pairs with a hearsay ending such as ～そうだ, ～ということだ, or ～らしい at the end. ～によれば is a slightly more formal variant.

伝聞の情報源を示す「～によると」。文の始めに置き、文末は「～そうだ／～ということだ／～らしい」など伝聞表現で結ぶのが普通。「～によれば」はややかための言い方。

Examples

• 天気予報によると、明日は雨が降るそうだ。

  てんきよほうによると、あしたはあめがふるそうだ。

  According to the weather forecast, it's going to rain tomorrow.

• 新聞によると、来年から税金が上がるということだ。

  しんぶんによると、らいねんからぜいきんがあがるということだ。

  According to the newspaper, taxes will go up from next year.

• 友だちの話によると、あの店はもう閉店したらしい。

  ともだちのはなしによると、あのみせはもうへいてんしたらしい。

  According to my friend, that shop has already closed down.

Notes

• Almost always paired with a hearsay sentence ending (～そうだ / ～ということだ / ～らしい).文末はほぼ必ず伝聞表現（～そうだ／～ということだ／～らしい）で結ぶ。
• Attaches directly to a noun source (天気予報によると, 〜の話によると).情報源の名詞に直接つく（天気予報によると／～の話によると）。
• ～によれば is a more formal alternative; do not use the cause/means meaning of ～によって here.「～によれば」はかための言い方。原因・手段の「～によって」とは意味が違う。
